For years we have been told that scented candles are for women. “Manly” men should not like scented candles. While there are candle fragrances that men do not normally gravitate to, a lot of men do like scented candles. An article written by the National Candle Association shows over 3 million scented candles are bought each week and men account for 10 percent of this. Like women, men are searching for that scented candle that best describes them. A “manly” scented candle, if you will.
Can a scented candle really be called manly? I believe the term is subjective, but historically masculine and feminine has been used to describe fragrances for quite a while. Masculine fragrances tend to have earthy, musk, clean, spicy and or citrus scents incorporated in them. This is not to say that women would not like these fragrances. To the contrary, men wear cologne to impress women. Women buy their men cologne, because they like the smell.
Just like anyone who buys a scented candle, men will buy a candle that compliments them or the ambiance they are trying to set. For most men, these fragrances tend to have a musky or earthy scent. Scented candles with frankincense, amber, patchouli, or sandalwood usually are the best picks. Then there are leather scents (my personal favorite), tobacco, and even whiskey scented candles.
If I learned one thing testing fragrances out for the scented candles made by MR Candle, its that people like what they like. When testing our chocolate chip cookie candle, more men liked it than women. Our whiskey and leather candle, was liked evenly across the board. This shows that a fragrance isn’t necessarily favored by one gender or another.
Men are buying more scented candles and they are buying more every year. They might not advertise, shout from the rooftops, or even discuss with their buddies, but they are buying them. And for the same reasons women do. To relax, cover odors, set the mood, or to compliment themselves or their home. The next time you are thinking of getting a man in your life a gift, look at scented candles. Just try to get him a scent you think he would like.
